For many decades, Josef Hoffmann was one of the crucial figures of Austrian culture. He was one of the founders of the Secession, the Wiener Werkstätte and the Werkbund and represented Austria in important exhibitions abroad. Known for his elegant and expensive art nouveau buildings, such as the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, and as antipode to Adolf Loos, in his early manifestoes he plead for a simplicity in architecture as it can be found in anonymous architecture, which became an important undercurrent in Austrian architecture up to today.
